About USPS Surplus

The U.S. Postal Service sells surplus through its own seller accounts on GovDeals, the marketplace run by Liquidity Services, so a USPS lot is bid on, paid for and collected under GovDeals' terms. Most of it is not postal equipment. The bulk is boxed general merchandise, often a full gaylord pallet box, plus clothing and shoes, household and cleaning products, toys, books and watches, listed by the Atlanta Surplus Center and the USPS Asset Accountability Service Centers. Retired vehicles, the LLV mail trucks among them, sell under a separate USPS Vehicle Sales account.

Most GovDeals lots carry a 12.5% buyer's premium, and the bid box on each lot shows its rate. Some Atlanta Surplus Center lots are marked shipping only; the rest are collected from the location on the listing, so check which before you bid. Everything is sold as-is.

Frequently asked questions

Where do USPS surplus auctions take place?

On GovDeals, under the Postal Service's own seller accounts. You register and bid with GovDeals, and its terms, including the buyer's premium shown in each lot's bid box, apply to USPS lots like any other.

Does USPS surplus ship?

Some of it. Certain Atlanta Surplus Center lots are listed as shipping only, while others, and vehicles, are collected from the location on the listing. The listing says which, so check it before you bid on a heavy box you cannot pick up.

Can I buy a retired USPS mail truck?

Yes. The Grumman LLV and its successors reach public auction as the fleet is replaced. They are right-hand drive, have no air conditioning in most cases, and have spent their lives idling and stopping. Buyers want them for utility, novelty and conversion projects rather than as daily drivers.

Are USPS vehicles road legal?

Usually, but check before you bid. Some are sold with titles and some are sold for parts or off-road use only, and the listing says which. Right-hand drive registration and inspection rules also vary by state, so confirm your own state's position before committing.
