About GovPlanet
GovPlanet sells retired U.S. military vehicles and equipment to the public. It is the military surplus arm of IronPlanet, which Ritchie Bros acquired in 2017, and it holds the contract to sell rolling stock from DLA Disposition Services, the agency that disposes of retired military property. Expect Humvees, five-ton cargo trucks, LMTVs, trailers and generators, demilitarised before sale. Registration is free and open to civilians, though some lots carry end-use or export restrictions that the listing states.
The bid is not the price. The buyer's premium is 15% on lots up to $10,000; above that it is 10%, and never less than $1,500, and paying by card adds 2.95%. Most Humvees sell for off-road use only, with an SF97 form rather than a title, and many lots are sold non-running, so read the IronClad inspection report literally. Removal is yours to arrange, usually within 15 business days of the invoice, from a military depot or DLA site with its own access rules.
Frequently asked questions
How do I register and start bidding on GovPlanet?
Creating an account on GovPlanet is free and requires only your email address and basic contact information. Visit govplanet.com and click 'Register' to set up your account. Once verified, you can browse auctions immediately, though some high-value or restricted items may require additional registration steps, such as providing tax ID documentation or a cashier's check for a buyer's deposit. You'll receive confirmation via email once your account is active.
What payment methods does GovPlanet accept?
GovPlanet accepts multiple payment methods including credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), wire transfers, and ACH bank transfers. The specific payment options available may depend on the auction category and sale amount. After winning an auction, you'll receive a payment invoice with detailed instructions. Some auctions require a deposit at the time of bidding, which is credited toward your final purchase if you win.
How does pickup and shipping work on GovPlanet?
Most GovPlanet auctions are pickup-only from the government facility where the item is located, though some sellers offer shipping options at an additional cost. You'll find specific pickup location and access information in each auction listing. Buyers are responsible for arranging transportation and are typically given a set timeframe to remove items from the site, usually 5-10 business days after payment clears. Large items like heavy equipment often require specialized transport, so plan accordingly and budget for moving costs.
Can a civilian buy from GovPlanet?
Yes, for the large majority of lots. Registration is open to the public. A minority of items carry end-use restrictions or export controls and say so on the listing, and some require a trade licence to collect. Read the lot terms before bidding rather than after winning.
What condition is ex-military equipment in?
Highly variable, and the inspection reports matter more than the photos. Military vehicles are maintained to a schedule but used hard and often stored outdoors for years before disposal. Assume deferred maintenance, budget for tyres, seals and batteries, and remember that a lowboy for an MRAP costs four figures.
